A mopa laser (Master Oscillator Power Amplifier) is a type of fibre laser that gives you greater control over pulse width and repetition frequency. That means it can produce very fine detailed engravings, color marks on metal, and shallow marks for delicate jobs—versus a standard fibre laser which typically excels at deeper or simpler marks.
The MOPA fibre laser machines are designed for marking and engraving on a wide range of metals (like stainless steel, titanium, aluminium) and some coated or plated surfaces. They are especially suitable when colour, fine detail or branding is required on metal parts.
If you mainly do standard metal engraving or marking (logos, serials, simple branding) a mopa laser machine (e.g., 20–30W) might suffice. But if you need deeper engravings or high throughput, then stepping up to a 60W or 80W mopa laser makes sense.
Yes—it does both. “Laser engraving” typically means deeper cuts or removal of material, while “laser marking” is more about altering the surface (etching, discoloration, colour change). Because the mopa laser allows fine control, you can switch between engraving and marking modes depending on your job.
You’ll want to use laser-marking software compatible with the MP-Series (such as LightBurn). Also ensure you configure pulse width, frequency, speed and power settings according to your material. Working and testing your settings is key to getting good results.
Keep your machine’s optics clean, ensure ventilation and cooling are maintained, and avoid running the laser machine too long at maximum power without breaks. Proper grounding and stable power supply also help. Regularly check alignment and keep the working area free of debris.
